WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DIVORCE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS?
People are scared right now because of the worldwide coronavirus threat. You have every right to be afraid. I am concerned for my family, my older parents, my friends, and my bank account. Fear is not a bad word. But, should you let this virus stop you from living your life? Should you let it paralyze you from deciding to move onto the next chapter in your life so that you can find happiness? Those are questions we will address in a blog soon. What about those of you that have already started your divorce? What does coronavirus mean for you?
The Divorce Will Go On
In short, your divorce will continue to go on. Whether you just retained an attorney to start your divorce, or you are deep inside the judicial process, there is no reason that your divorce cannot continue to move to a resolution. We know that many people are scared and hiding in their homes. However, the beauty of today’s technology is that we can continue to service clients and engage in settlement discussions to move things along even when offices are closed.
There are some attorneys out there that have clung to the past. These attorneys might not have the fully technologically integrated law firm that others, like Netsquire – Previte Nachlinger, P.C., have. When you first meet with an attorney, you should pay attention to how their office is structured. Will have you access to your file on the cloud at all time? Is their office paperless? How much do they use technology to help streamline things and ultimately help you and your case? The answers to these questions can be more important, in many cases, than the knowledge of the law or experience.
Don’t Let Coronavirus Paralyze You
Healthy fear is natural and okay. However, do not feel like you should just ignore your attorney because you are too afraid of what tomorrow brings. While economic considerations are very important, you should speak with your attorney about how they can work with you during these uncertain times. You are entitled to finality in your divorce so that you can find happiness again. Nothing about coronavirus should change that.
The judicial system will continue to move forward during these times. In New Jersey, our judges are doing everything they can with technology to keep cases moving even when courthouses are closed to the public and attorneys are working from home. While that could change at any time, the entire system is committed to ensuring your case continues to move even while many parts of society are closed down.
